5 Boat Trailer Maintenance Checks Before Your Next Trip to the Ramp
Keep your boat trailer safe on the road this season. Gulf Marine of Clearwater shares 5 quick checks to make before you hit the ramp.
1) Wheel Bearings
Bearings are the #1 cause of roadside trailer breakdowns.
Heat, saltwater, and boat ramp dunking wear them out faster than regular car wheels.
Spin each wheel by hand, it should turn smoothly with no grinding, wobble, or resistance.
If you hear noise or feel play in the hub, don’t tow it.
Repacking or replacing bearings is quick, affordable, and a lot cheaper than a breakdown on I-275.
2) Tires and Air Pressure
Trailer tires age even when they’re not used often.
Florida heat breaks down rubber over time regardless of tread depth.
Check the sidewall for cracking, check the date code (tires over 5–6 years old should be inspected closely), and always check pressure cold before towing.

3) Lights and Wiring
Nothing stops a trip faster than a trooper pulling you over for a dead brake light. Saltwater and corrosion are hard on trailer wiring, especially at the connector.
Before you leave, plug in and have someone confirm brake lights, turn signals, and running lights all work.
A quick spray of dielectric grease on the connector goes a long way in salt air.
4) Winch, Straps and Bunks
Check that your winch strap isn’t frayed and the ratchet is holding tension.
Inspect the bunks or rollers your boat rests on, dry-rotted carpet or a stuck roller can scratch your hull or let the boat shift in transit.
This is also a good time to make sure your safety chains and coupler are in good shape.
5) Hub, Axle and Frame
Give the trailer a visual once-over: rust or corrosion on the frame, play in the axle, or a hub that feels loose. Saltwater exposure means Florida trailers need more frequent inspection than trailers used only in freshwater.
